In a sector shaped by the dominant narratives of volunteerism, facilitators and consultants who center Black experience are rare. But what they've built, the ability to advocate, to center voices the sector overlooks, and to hold the line on what actually matters, is something every volunteer engagement leader can learn from. There's a specific lived experience in leading, engaging, and partnering with volunteers while Black, so we're bringing them into one room to share their experiences, unfiltered.
What does it take to break through the white wall of volunteerism, to lead complex, challenging, yet culturally grounded conversations in our sector? How did they, and how could you, develop the skill, experience, and fortitude necessary to lead similar conversations in your own spaces?
It's an opportunity to hear from those who believe in this field and love it enough to interrogate it. They'll trace their real journeys, showing how they found their voice, built their expertise, and kept going in a sector that wasn't historically built for them. You'll hear their stories, reflect on your own, share your own, and learn in community.
This is also an opportunity to reflect on all of our personal journeys: how we've shown up with our values and convictions, and how others can start being bolder in sharing their 'whys' too.
In this discussion, we'll talk about how to:
Center Black voices in your programs and partnerships, and why it strengthens the whole of your volunteer engagement and nonprofit work
Keep the main thing the main thing by staying grounded and effective in rooms that may resist the message
Hold onto yourself as you advocate for others, and find those spaces of joy as you walk along this journey.

Everyone. Whether you're a Black practitioner looking for community and language for your experience, or a volunteer engagement leader who wants to do this work better, you belong in this room. The best way to learn to navigate the sector is to learn from the best of us.
This isn't a lecture on best practice, but an honest and vulnerable conversation about doing this work well, and the skill, voice, and fortitude it takes to lead it.
